The Nissan Figaro was manufactured with a 987cc fuel injected turbocharged MA10ET engine which is perfectly suited to the vehicle. The 4 cylinder engine is a equipped with a PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) Valve system. The PCV Valve is a 1 way valve attached to the rocker cover on the engine and also to the intake manifold.

As the engine operates and the pistons travel up and down the cylinders, small amounts of pressure escape past the piston rings and enter the crank case. Without being evacuated, this pressure can be very detrimental to the longevity of the engine itself so a PCV Valve is a 1 way valve that allows this pressure to be pulled out of the crankcase, through the valve, into the intake manifold where it can be mixed with fresh air and fuel and combusted again which also assists in reducing air pollution. In the past, these gasses where released to atmosphere which caused unnecessary pollution, as well as a strong smell of hot burning oil vapour.

Over time, the Nissan Figaro PCV Valves can fail causing pressurised air from the turbocharger to enter the crankcase or seizing where positive crankcase pressure cannot be evacuated. This is due to the 1 way valve breaking down or seizing internally. This can cause excessive oil burning, very poor rpm, sluggish and less responsive to drive and a poor/hunting idle.

These valve are easy to check for correct operation: remove the valve from the vehicle and test by checking that the 1 way valve is working. If you can blow through the valve but not suck through, the valve is operational. If on the other hand you can neither suck or blow through / suck and blow through, the valve is defective and requires changing.
