The Nissan Figaro has been equipped with a smooth and effortless 3 speed automatic transmission. The power to the gearbox is passed from the torque converter which is turn is attached to the flywheel of the engine. Bolted directly to the crank shaft, the flywheel has multiple purposes. Firstly, it is designed to an accurate weight to ensure the engine has enough inertia to spin at idle. Secondly, it is the method in which rotational force is transmitted from the engine to the torque converter and finally, it is equipped with a toothed external ring gear which the starter motor forces to spin to start the engine from a turn of the key.

The flywheel, by design, does have multiple purposes and due to this, vast pressure and large temperature variations, can fail over time. The ring gear can break causing the starter motor to become ineffective and most commonly, the flywheel can crack causing it to become out of balance and affect its ability to transmit power to the gearbox.
