Understanding the Price Variations of Nissan Figaros: What You Need to Know

When browsing for a Nissan Figaro, you’ll find prices ranging from a few thousand pounds to as much as £40,000.  Sotherbys sold an original Nissan Figaro without restoration for £39,000 in November last year (2023) with only 6000 miles on the clock. Similarly, Nissan Figaros on the US website Bring-a-Trailer, are fetching between $18,000 and $35,000 dependent on mileage over the last 12 months.

The wide price variations can be attributed to several factors, including the mileage, car’s condition, service history, and, as the vehicle is approaching 35 years old, the level of restoration work performed.

The Lower End: Figaros Priced at a Few Thousand Pounds

Figaros priced on the lower end of the spectrum, often around £5,000 to £10,000, typically have not undergone significant restoration. These cars are more likely to have various issues, which can make them less appealing and potentially more costly in the long run. Here are some common problems you might encounter:

  • Rust and Structural Integrity: Given that these cars are 34 years old, rust is a prevalent issue, especially if the car hasn’t been adequately protected or stored. Rust can compromise the car’s structural integrity, making it potentially unsafe to drive. The Figaros weak spot is the wheel arches so make sure you give this a proper inspection if you are looking to purchase a Figaro at the lower end of the price spectrum. If the rust spreads to the chassis of the vehicle it is almost impossible to make it road safe.

  • Mechanical Failures: Older Figaros often have original mechanical parts that are likely worn out. This can lead to frequent breakdowns and expensive repairs. Without proper maintenance records, the risk of unforeseen mechanical failures is high. Look for proof of annual servicing and ask about any maintenance work that has been done by the current owners. The higher the mileage, the more chance that key parts under the bonnet will need to have been replaced. We have had Figaro’s come to us for Evaluations that have rolled off the truck as if the brakes were non existent!

  • Worn Interiors: The upholstery in these vehicles is often heavily worn, with rips, tears, and almost always sagging seats with springs that have long but given way. Restoring the interior can be costly, particularly if you want to maintain the car’s vintage charm with high-quality materials.

  • Roof Condition: A common issue with Figaros is the condition of the convertible roof. Cracks, leaks, and gaps can lead to water ingress, which causes dampness and accelerates rust. Checking the roof’s condition is essential when evaluating a lower-priced Figaro.

Mid-Range to High-End Figaros: Low Mileage or Partial Restorations

Figaros that are lower mileage and in better condition or, have undergone some level of restoration command a higher price. Expect to pay between £15,000 to £40,000 for these vehicles –  highlighting their appeal and demand, even in original condition.

  • Rarity and Appeal: Figaros that have been well-maintained and are in good condition can command higher prices due to their rarity and enduring appeal. These cars are often purchased by collectors or enthusiasts who value the Figaro’s unique design and charm.

  • Moderate Upgrades: Some Figaros in this price range may have received moderate upgrades, such as new upholstery, minor mechanical work, or partial paint jobs. These improvements can enhance the car’s reliability and aesthetic appeal without a full restoration.

The High-End: Fully Restored Figaros

At the top end of the market, fully restored Figaros by the experts (us) sell for £59,950. These restorations involve extensive work, over 500 hours, to take the Figaro beyond its original condition.

  • Complete Overhaul: A fully restored Figaro includes a complete mechanical overhaul, ensuring that all parts are either replaced with new or refurbished to function like new. This significantly reduces the risk of mechanical issues and makes the car more reliable for regular use.

  • New Parts and Modern Tech: These restorations involve replacing old, worn-out parts with new ones, upgrading the vehicle’s performance, and adding modern conveniences like heated seats, advanced stereo systems with Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay, and high-quality sound systems. These enhancements make the driving experience far superior to that of an unrestored Figaro.

  • Premium Finishes: Our Restored & Remastered Figaros and Le Pink Figaros go a fair few extra miles lets say with high-end finishes.  A five-layer paint job and expertly trimmed interiors in soft grain Italian leather. These details not only restore the car’s original beauty but also increase its value significantly.

Conclusion: A Wise Investment in a Classic Car

In conclusion, the price variation in Nissan Figaros is largely dependent on their mileage, condition and the extent of restoration work performed. While a low-priced Figaro may seem attractive, it often comes with significant risks and potential repair costs. On the other hand, investing in a fully restored Figaro offers the benefits of a classic car with the reliability and comfort of modern upgrades and the mileage becomes a non issue when a new engine, brakes etc etc are fitted.

Whether you’re drawn to the Figaro’s vintage charm or its potential as a sound investment, understanding these price differences is crucial to making an informed purchase.
